Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome or Shin Splints for short!

Well acording to the doctor, I have shin splints! This is a condition that before now I thought was a lazy persons excuse to not run, well turns out it was me who was the lazy one, as now I am putting effort in I have them myself! And I can tell you, its not made up!!

So it looks like I might of over trained, I had built up my running times, and was up to doing a steady hour long run without stopping, and was actually starting to enjoy doing it too! Then I went out for a run with some other people, at a pace that was considerably faster then I was comfortable with, and after about 10/15 minutes now though I start to get bad pains down my left shin, and it really is a show stopper now!

The first couple of times I must admit, I kept going on it as the pain was building, okay with hindsight this was a silly decision, but let’s face it hindsight is a wonderful thing, and if I had it I wouldn’t be this fat and unfit in the first place! I took a week off running, and tried to stretch it out, but after a weeks rest I was no better, intact it is worse! So now I have given in, I have done what no man likes to do and admitted weakness, I have gone to the doctors, who has referred me to the physio!

My appointment is still over a week away, but don’t worry, I have not been sat on my bum doing nothing, I have discovered the elliptical trainer, and have also been doing 3
strength training sessions a week, so hopefully this enforced break from running will help me develop a more all round training program, although I never thought I’d hear myself say this, but I can’t wait to get back down on my river bank for an hours run!

Will let you know what the physio says next week!
