Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome or Shin Splints for short!

Posted by Tubby Paul on November 20, 2012

Well acording to the doctor, I have shin splints! This is a condition that before now I thought was a lazy persons excuse to not run, well turns out it was me who was the lazy one, as now I am putting effort in I have them myself! And I can tell you, its not made up!!

So it looks like I might of over trained, I had built up my running times, and was up to doing a steady hour long run without stopping, and was actually starting to enjoy doing it too! Then I went out for a run with some other people, at a pace that was considerably faster then I was comfortable with, and after about 10/15 minutes now though I start to get bad pains down my left shin, and it really is a show stopper now!

The first couple of times I must admit, I kept going on it as the pain was building, okay with hindsight this was a silly decision, but let’s face it hindsight is a wonderful thing, and if I had it I wouldn’t be this fat and unfit in the first place! I took a week off running, and tried to stretch it out, but after a weeks rest I was no better, intact it is worse! So now I have given in, I have done what no man likes to do and admitted weakness, I have gone to the doctors, who has referred me to the physio!

My appointment is still over a week away, but don’t worry, I have not been sat on my bum doing nothing, I have discovered the elliptical trainer, and have also been doing 3
strength training sessions a week, so hopefully this enforced break from running will help me develop a more all round training program, although I never thought I’d hear myself say this, but I can’t wait to get back down on my river bank for an hours run!

Will let you know what the physio says next week!

See you in the gym.

27 Hour Day!

Posted by Tubby Paul on November 13, 2012

I need more time in my day! Not for training, I am managing that, generally getting a cardio session at least 5 days a week, and a strength session with my need gym buddy 3 days a week.

I need extra time for all the extra things, I have several part
written blog entries in my drafts, but I don’t have enough time to finish them!

As I am writing this now on my phone in bed, I can hear my son filling his nappy, which means I have to go!

See you all in the gym,

Paul

Food for Thought!

One Regular Guy Writing about Food, Exercise and Living Past 100

It is turning out that the fast food high fat Standard American Diet (SAD) has, in fact, some pretty sad impacts on the brain besides the waistline.

The New York Times reported that the Society for Neuroscience met in New Orleans and University of Minnesota scientists demonstrated that a group of rats that consumed normal food for four months compared favorably with a group of rats that ate a diet with 40 percent fat in it. Both diets had the same amount of calories.

The scientists administered a memory test to the rats after four months. Those with the normal diet performed as they had previously while those on the high-fat diet yielded much poorer results.

The rats were then broken into two groups. One group had running wheels. The other didn’t. So, those on the high fat diet could or could not exercise.

Best Thing Since Sliced Bread?

Posted by Tubby Paul on November 4, 2012

For several months now, we have not had anything “white” in our house! This mainly started as a necessity when my other half again suffered with gestational diabetes, so to help her manage the condition using diet alone (which we did, all the way to the end,) we ditched the white processed products, and changed our habits.

Brown rice, wholemeal pasta and whole grain bread have been topping the shopping list, with the sizes of our portions getting cut dramatically.  The composition of the meal has also changed, no longer a big pile of stodgy carbs, just a tiny amount of carbs will do the trick, especially for our evening meal, sometimes having no carbs at all!

Well over the last few days, for several reasons, I have eaten more white bread and processed food than I have in a very long time! It has left me feeling sluggish and bloated, I am all bunged up too, and I don’t mean my nose!

Excuses? Well I could make several, not wanting to cause a fuss or offend people we have been visiting when they make me food, this is an excuse I do agree with, all be it not too often! That doesn’t account for when I ended up in rotten Ronnie’s (McDonald’s) and instead of trying to pick out some sort of healthyish option I went for a large Big-Mac meal with a shake! Not ever so good for me is it! Lets just say I am not looking forward to my weigh in on Tuesday!

So no, like me being fat in the first place, there is no one to blame apart from myself! Another thing that hasn’t helped is the fact I haven’t been drinking enough water either, something I have worked hard at doing for the last few months! It’s amazing how just 3 days of laziness can make you feel so bad!

So enough is enough today, time to reset, and re-kick start my healthy eating! I am going to beat this flab if it kills me!!

See you in the gym,

Paul

Can’t Run, Won’t Run!

Posted by Tubby Paul on November 3, 2012

Well this is frustrating now, just as I’m actually starting to enjoy running outside, I go and tweak my leg!
Went for a 45 minute run on Monday, and about 20 minutes in, down the length of my left shin started to ache. I guess with hindsight that would have been a good time to stop and head home, but nope, I kept going, ran my 45 minutes, and don’t tell everyone, but I did actually enjoy my run!

I got home, my leg quite sore, a shower and some ibuprofen made me feel much better, and I didn’t think a great deal more of it! The next day, I just had a dull ache, so about half advanced hour before my run, I popped a couple more tablets, and headed out. I only had time for a 20 minute run, so decided to do my old short loop and try to pick up the pace a little!

I know, yes totally the wrong thing to do! However there was no more pain on the run as I’d taken the tablets, so ran quick, and thought no more of it apart from an ache by bed time!

So now its Wednesday, and I decide to do a bit of a DIY mini circuit, 20m shuttles, Sprint then walk x 10, followed by 10 sit-ups. Managed my first set okay, got up from my sit-ups to start a sprint and ow, nope, I’m not doing that! Right, bugger, okay, let’s just jog back home then…ow nope, not doing that either!

Slow walk home it is then, and a few days of rest and stretching it is, its Saturday now, and my leg still aches, guess I will find out on Monday how it is as I will have to run at work, if it still hurts I will have to get signed off running for a few weeks. I really don’t want that to happen, as I really am starting to enjoy my running, as well as feeling and (I hope) looking better.

Guess time will tell, at least I can still do other cardiovascular and strength training, just have to make sure its low impact!  I’ll be sure to let you know how it goes!

See you in the gym
